And My Favourite Album Of The Year WAAAAAS:

Angles- The Strokes

“I’m putting your patience to the test.”

And with that opening line, Julian Casablancas is mocking us all. “Haha, I know you’re waiting for this! …Imma take my sweet time.” says he, with his excellent hair and awesome shoe collection. Curse him and his coolness.

I love the Strokes. They are one of my favourite bands in the whole world. I love all of their albums (for those wondering about the order in which I love them, which is all of you: 2, 3, 1, 4) which I guess puts me in the minority of people who care about the Strokes. Y’know what the sad thing is? The Strokes don’t seem to love The Strokes. This is an album that would not exist if people weren’t constantly asking them if it was happening. I mean, in interviews they say things like, “A band is a great way to ruin a friendship.” and Julian recorded vocals in a separate studio from the rest of the band and emailed them to them. …It’s sad but it also makes them oddly appealing. Like, there’s a tension between them that is sexy and cool. Disfunction is sexy and cool, guys. Everyone knows that!

So.. why is an album made by people who seem barely able to stand each other’s company and hide this very poorly my favourite album of the year? BECAUSE. They are awesome. There’s an effortlessness to The Strokes that even if they’ve gone through months of awkward silences to work on these songs, it still seems like they just spent a week kind of falling into them. They also have really good hair.

They’re very talented individuals. For a band that most people seem to think need to try harder, there’s a lot going on here that is complex and well thought through. ‘Metabolism’ is intense. ‘Under Cover Of Darkness’ is pretty much perfect. ‘Gratisfaction’ has a gang-vocal at the end that makes me think they’re secretly bezzies and are screwing with us all. I love this album.

…I just really like The Strokes.

Standout Tracks: Under Cover Of Darkness, Machu Picchu, Two Kinds Of Happiness, Taken For A Fool, Gratisfaction, Metabolism.
